I love that I can print from my phone. Great quality prints.

Posted by Kristen Vasquez on 2022 Jun 14th

This is the best printer I have ever had. I love the fact that I can print directly from my phone, even though it cost a little extra. I would definitely recommend this printer to anyone looking for a great quality, fast printing.

Setup was extremely easy -- I'm saying "Stupid Simple Setup"!

Posted by James Kardach on 2022 Jun 14th

I ordered this printer yesterday and it came today. I was worried about the setup, because all of the really low reviews said that it was near impossible to setup (one guy was a computer expert). I was amazed at how easy this was. I pulled it out of the box, pulled the bag off, took the tape off, put paper in it, plugged it in, and pressed the power button. It came-up and booted. It probably took 3-4 minutes to come up the first time, but I was greeted by the small LCD screen. I pressed the little wireless icon (upper right corner) and presented three options. I picked the center one (WiFi On). It scanned and presented the SSIDs, I picked mine, entered my password and it connected. I then opened the printer icon for my mac and added a printer. It was there, I selected it, and it was installed. Next I printed a color page from my computer, and it printed on the printer. I took out my iPhone, brought up an email, hit the forward button and selected print, and the printer was found and I was able to print from my iPhone. Dang that was easy! The toner cartridges were already installed, I didn't have to do a thing. I've never had a printer come up this easy. So I remembered in the other reviews about the HP SMART APP. I typically don't like these, but thought I'd give it a try. Downloaded it from the App store, clicked it, and it not only found my new HP Laserjet (this one), it found our old HP printer down stairs. I clicked into the printer, selected Printer Reports and clicked the print next to "Demo Page" and it printed. OK, so I can't really tell you how great the printer is yet, I have literally had this printer for less than an hour. But this printer is dead simple to install if it is on a network. I did not connect it to USB to install it (this might be the issue with others), I basically just connected it to the network and went from there. However I will say that that this new printer relationship has started out remarkably well and I'm super happy with it so far. I'll update after using it for a couple of weeks.

      HP Quality All The Way

Posted by Michael Westfahl on 2022 Jun 14th

Received in factory packaging. Easily unpacked. No boo-boos. Set up was minimal from start to finish. No network connection problems; smooth integration into our existing bluetooth network. Print quality: Standard B/W printing is pristine. Color brochure printing is professional grade. Photo printing is more than satisfactory with careful application using the correct, HP recommended papers. All total, we are SO very satisfied and glad to have made the switch from inkjet to laser!!!

Up and running in minutes. Very happy so far.

Posted by RWS Apogee on 2022 Jun 14th

I purchased this printer because I got tired of the horrendous cost of ink with my Canon Maxify 2120. The pre-programmed purge cycles were using more ink than I was putting on paper. I've only had the HP a short while so this review is more about set up and initial impressions than long-term experience. I will update if anything changes significantly. The first thing you will notice upon delivery is the printer is heavy! I'm guessing around 40 pounds or so in the box. It is packaged well and there's very little to do prior to plugging it in. There is some packing tape securing various parts of the printer, but that's about it. Even the toner cartridges are installed, so no need to mess with those. I had it out of the box and turned on in about 5 minutes. I was eager to see the print quality so I went to setup and the unit immediately found my wireless network. Then I had Mac Catalina install it through the printer settings. Going this route will enable you to print literally within a minute, but it won't enable scanning and other functions. I printed several samples -- PDFs, spreadsheets, Word docs, and included 2-sided with absolutely no problems. After that, I downloaded and installed the printer management software from 123.hp.com. This installs an app that will integrate scanning, toner levels, etc. into the Mac print function. It also allows you to register the product and access a multitude of settings, most of which you will likely not need to adjust. I tried scanning using the Mac function and it worked as expected. You can also scan using the HP app. After initial setup on my iMac Pro, I let the Mac print settings install it on two MacBook Pros without a hitch. It also worked with no intervention on my part with AirPrint 2 on my iPhone and iPad. In summary, in less than an hour, I had the unit printing from a desktop, 2 laptops, a phone and an iPad with no difficulty whatsoever. The only negatives I see are very minor. The power button has a very bright, white LED that flashes slowly when the printer is in the sleep mode. If you install the printer in a room where you value darkness, it might be annoying (a small piece of electrical tape over it would work). Also, the touchscreen is very small. If you have large fingers, you will have to be careful when entering something like your wifi password. All in all, I am very happy with this HP so far.

If you have problems printing, I got the cure to make the printer work great!

Posted by Botpa on 2022 Jun 14th

This thing is absolutely great! I am running this of my home WiFi and it's absolutely rock solid. I read reviews that people had a hard time printing and had to reboot windows to get the print spooler to work. I had that problem as well but it's really easy to solve,. just go to your WiFi or router and configure it to use static address for the printer. An easy way to figure out which IP you need to do that for is to go to the printer, click on the network configuration menu and take note of the IP address. Go to your router and configure the router to always assign that IP address to the printer. If needed clean out any pending print jobs, reboot and you're done. Rock solid after that.

      Quiet with beautiful color printing

Posted by Katie D. on 2022 Jun 14th

I purchased this to avoid having to replace yet another inkjet printer (those seem to last about 2 years before they start to clog up.) Coming from a generation where this sort of technology used to cost in the thousands of dollars, the price on this color unit surprised me. And, so did the great quality of the printing. As long as I use a "photo" quality paper, matte or gloss, I get wonderful results. When using standard paper the results are muted but quite good. The set up is a bit lengthier than some printers because of the unpacking, prepping and inserting of the multiple color "blades" inside, but once in the unit warmed up in seconds and was sending out the first prints quickly. With the starter cartridges rated at more than 1,000 pages, I do not believe I will be needing more toner for a great many months. I do about 50 pages a week so I am not taxing the capability of the unit in the slightest. The only thing I wish it had that my ink jets did is a tray in which to place DVDs and CDs for labeling. Sigh. Can't have everything.

Wish scanner scanned EDGE TO EDGE, but it leaves a gap all the way around!

Posted by GCK on 2022 Jun 14th

Printer is fabulous. Based upon what all it does for the price, it is marvelous. People who complain about photograph quality have absolutely no background to understand these things! It’s like buying a Toyota Avalon and complaining because it can’t haul enough gravel in it to effectively surface their driveway. Inkjet printers on glossy paper is what you need for near photographic look. I’ve had wonderful experience with that—absolutely superb prints on Canons of the day (but boy have they changed—I’ve gone from loving them to hating them!), but that was a few decades ago. I HATE inkjet printers now, because if you don’t use it for a week or two (much worse when you have a month or two gap), it keeps using up all your ink (to keep it flowing instead of stopping up the jets—and mfg’s think gold is a major ingredient of ink, I think)! You can spend over $100 on cartridges for which you are “supposed to get 1,700 pages” [this is for HP printer, which was supposed to be cheaper per copy because of large ink cartridges--HAH--better use them fast, because they waste your ink all day and all night while not in use!!!], then by using it very infrequently, be lucky if you get a few dozen prints (or so it seems—who keeps count on low volume usage!). A laser jet you can leave alone for ½ year, then come in, turn it on, and print out hundreds of fabulous quality pages, and in a real hurry! Pictures are quite good as well—IF you understand the kind of quality you can expect from a laser. Things are crisp and distinct, and color looks great on designed patterns, but certainly not photo-quality on faces, scenery, etc. That is NOT what it’s made for. If you understand that, you may be quite satisfied with printed color pictures. Compared to the frustrations of inkjets, I LOVE it!!! But I do have a list of complaints--things I wish Brother did differently on this printer, although if I had it to do over again with only the choices and prices that were available, I would HANDS DOWN buy it again--no question! That's why I give it 5 stars, despite my gripes: --I hate the way the scanner has a gap all the way around the platen! Scanning is NOT just to make copies, so do NOT limit the scanner by the printer’s edge limitation…which by the way, can’t they overcome that in 3+ decades?! --I scan checks into my bank account. I can get around this, but it's a hassle EVERY TIME I scan a check. --I've had to scan in documents that were printed into that gap area on both sides. It caused a hassle!: --I scanned it twice, once fully including the left side into the scanned area, then fully on the right. --Then I went to Microsoft Publisher, overlapped, cut, then matched images, combined, and saved as JPEG. That's a TON of work for what should have been a simple, one-pass scan! If this weren't rare for me, I'd DEFINITELY send the thing back and buy a different printer for the scanner! --I WISH it had a paper feeder for the scanner. This would: --At least solve the top-bottom gap problem. --Enable scanning longer documents. --And most obviously, allow scanning of a stack of documents, instead of one at a time. BUT I suppose this was one of those built-in limitations to force purchase of a more expensive model. Once again, while I REALLY WISH they’d make these improvements, all things considered FOR the price, I’d make the same choice all over again.

Easy set up and fast printing

Posted by Mary F. on 2022 Jun 14th

I bought the color printer - HL-L3290CDW (printer, scanner & copier). First, it's bigger and heavier than I expected. Getting it out of the box was a challenge, but I managed it myself. If you follow the Quick Setup Guide to the letter, you should be fine. Take your time removing all the tape and packaging. Had a little hiccup during the install because I couldn't complete it using the disc provided because my computer does not have an external disc drive. I found the drivers at Brother online and completed the install. During the setup, the printer wasn't recognized by my wifi network, so I resorted to using a USB cord between my computer & printer to finish the install. After that, I was able to set up the wireless print function on the computer and cell phone. This printer is faster and quieter than I expected as well. It defaults to 2-sided (duplex) printing so you have to manually uncheck the function if you don't want it. The print quality looks great and I think there's a setting to make it darker but that would use more ink. I'm happy with my choice of a color laser printer. At first I was going to go cheap and buy the monochrome model, but knew I would regret not having color copying available. The brand name replacement cartridges are pricey so I'm on the lookout for a reputable off-brand replacement. I believe I'll get longer life from the laser cartridges considering how quickly the inkjet refills dried up. After two days of use, I am happy with it. More use over time and troubleshooting any future issues will be the true test. If there's anything else that would be helpful after more use, I'll report back.

      Reliable, good quality, good networking

Posted by Illini Fans on 2022 Jun 14th

I like everything about this printer. Why did I wait so long to go to a laser printer? The Canon inkjets I owned required frequent cartridge changes, experienced mechanical failures on a regular basis, and had difficulty regularly printing from Chrome using Google Cloud Print. This Brother printer is a dream - very reliable, cartridges last forever with typical home use (and they don't dry up like inkjet), and the wireless printing is rock-solid - I've not had any issues printing from Windows, Mac or Chromebook. Good paper capacity, and the copy/scan function works well too. If you need to scan or copy multiple pieces on a regular basis you should consider the next model up that has a feeder - this model is individual scan or copy. But for those of us with infrequent scan/copy needs, this is a great choice.
