Works without any drivers on macOS - great printer

Posted by MMG on 2022 Jun 14th

This printer is great, the features and quality are first rate. Easy to use, great web server features, very low power during sleep, no noise, etc. make this perfect for home (in my case) or small office. This printer replaced an HP LaserJet Pro M570DN which was also great but we wanted something smaller. In response to a couple of things people posted here: 1. We use macOS and all I did was click on printer settings and + to add a printer. macOS automatically added the printer, scanner, fax (I removed the fax) using AirPrint. I was printing and scanning in about 30 seconds and the system knew about all features such as trays, duplexing, etc. I and macOS did not download any HP software! I could access the scanner, supplies, web server, etc. via Mac printer settings. Everything "just worked". The printer was connected to the network via ethernet (but wireless is the same). The printer automatically showed up on our iPads and we printed from them fine with nothing to do except select the printer the first time. 2. I did my research and read the data sheet and bought the FDW model because that is the only model that does auto duplexing for print and scan. Some people complained about a missing feature because they bought a different model. There are 4 versions of the M479. I highly recommend this printer.

PERFECT DELIVERY, PERFECT INSTALLATION & PERFORMANCE

    Posted by Sanc33647 on 2022 Jun 14th

I have owned numerous Multi-Function Laser Printers made by HP and they have gotten better and better through the years. I took delivery of this M479fdw today via Amazon's own delivery team. Unlike other packages that I have received via UPS and FedEx, this package arrived without a scratch, dent or ding. The delivery person even helped me bring it inside. The setup was far simpler than it was even 3 years ago, and light years easier than it was 10 years ago. The only cord I attached was the power cord, so unlike earlier years I have no extra USB cord to connect the printer to the PC. It set up its own internal Wi-Fi connection, and I had zero issues getting this or any other part of this printer to work. I had a scan job waiting for this printer to be installed and it worked perfectly. Similarly the color printer performed flawlessly. I have to tell you. Your time, like mine, is valuable; and I have no extra time to fool around with printers that don't work as they should. If you're looking for a multi-function printer you can count on, this is a solid choice. Similarly if you've seen the airwaves plastered recently by a certain 7'-1" tall former basketball player touting another printer brand. I can tell you first hand that system and brand is junk. If you want plugged printer heads and slow scanning that's the unit for you. As for me, it will be HP at all of my locations.

    A top-notch laser all-in-one printer

Posted by Paul W. Jones on 2022 Jun 14th

I have had a lot of printers over the years (IBM, Epson, HP, Canon, Lexmark, etc.), and had kind of gone away from HP a bit due to their software/driver problems (when they off-shored the development/support, the quality slipped quite a bit). However, when printing Christmas cards, my Canon died, and I had been impressed with this HP model when I was helping my sister sort out hers, so I bought one (MFP M479fdw). Software seems to work reliably so far, so I think HP has addressed that somewhat, granted it is a bit rough and crude in places, but it works. And it works from both Windows 10 and macOS 11 (Big Sur), as well as from mobile (iOS). The printer hardware seems to be very good, output arrives quite fast. One of the problems you run into with cheaper printers (including some lower end HPs) is that they do not put much horsepower into the printer CPUs, and cost-reduce the hardware to the point that they are slow and do not hold up, but this version seems well designed and made. Ratings from PC Magazine, Wirecutter, etc. generally have this printer at or towards the top, I would say that is accurate. Print quality on text is excellent, graphics from web pages and similar also excellent, scans are very good (a custom flat-bed would be a tad better, but this is for an all-in-one amongst the best I have seen). For printing high-quality pictures, you probably still want a Canon or Epson InkJet printer, but this one prints OK for a laser. HP does not ship this printer with full duty cycle cartridges, but the ones they ship with will still do a decent number of pages. Control screen is touch and good sized, gets the job done. Unit is fairly heavy and large, so if you are using this on a desk, check the dimensions some. The printer is not cheap, but it has excellent print quality and appears to be very well built, so HP has come back to where it once was, at the top.

Saved my teleworking life; just wish it scanned to Apple computers

Posted by Damion on 2022 Jun 14th

Fantastic printer for home office use while I'm teleworking. Easy to set up over WiFi. Only complaint is that the direct Scan to Computer from the Printer screen won't work with Mac computers; only Windows. It's a limitation that's regrettably buried in the user manual (which you can read online). Fatal flaw? No. Just more cumbersome. Printer cartridges that came with the printer were good: I got about 2500 pages about of them and while some still low, I'm still using all the originals except the black ink. Double sided printing is fast; double sided scanning is fast. Really can't complain.

    FANTASTIC PRINTER

Posted by Benton Ruth on 2022 Jun 14th

My personal HP 4050TN printer is 20 years old and works FLAWLESSLY on a daily basis. Very cost effective. This NEW printer is without peer in many respects. One day old and we are in awe of its QUALITY. I am not a computer geek, but I know enough to report this printer as A+++. Purchase with confidence. It took me 6 months researching to decide and I am not disappointed.

    Great Printer

Posted by Christina V. on 2022 Jun 14th

This is an awesome printer, I'm really impressed, there were some reviews saying that the driver does not let you select a print quality, which was true, but I just installed the general mac version of the software (with less features I may add) and it lets me select a print quality, but HP needs to fix that issue with its original driver, I mean what kind of a thing is that to be missing from a driver lol its ridiculous. Everyone who gets this printer should contact HP and bug them about it until they release an updated version of their driver. Other than that it's a great printer and prints fast, with easy to set up instructions and quick start guide.

    VERY well designed printer !

Posted by Don Y on 2022 Jun 14th

Wow ! I have always liked HP printers. They really have great software and hardware engineers. But, I really didn't think a simple color laser printer could get much better. I was sooo wrong. This HP laser printer is fantastic ! So many great features that just work seamlessly. The web interface is simple and has everything you could possibly want to setup on a printer. The scanner works perfect … every time. Scan to email or PC is soooo smooth. Great printer ! I would highly recommend it for home or office use.
